Questions about refrigerators

Choose a refrigerator by the space in your kitchen, the size of your household and how you shop. You can filter here by type, capacity, number of doors, cooling system, Shabbat mode and dimensions.

What capacity do we need?

A common rule of thumb: 300–400 litres for a couple, 500–600 litres for a family of 4–5, and 600 litres or more for a large family or anyone who cooks a lot ahead. Check whether the specification gives gross or net capacity. Net is what you can actually fill, and it is smaller than gross.

How do I measure the space for a fridge?

Measure the width, height and depth of the recess, and leave room for ventilation as the manufacturer instructs. Check that the door can open fully without hitting a wall or cabinet. Measure the way in too: the front door, the hallway and the lift.

No Frost or De Frost?

In a No Frost fridge a fan circulates the cold air, ice doesn't build up and there is no need to defrost. A De Frost model's freezer needs defrosting from time to time. It is usually simpler and cheaper.

Top freezer, bottom freezer or 4 doors?

With a top freezer the freezer is above, and it is usually the simplest and cheapest design. With a bottom freezer the food compartment is at eye level and the freezer is in drawers below. A 4-door or side-by-side fridge has the most space and the most compartments, but it is wider. Check the width against the space in your kitchen.

What is "Shabbat mode" on a fridge?

A mode that turns off the light, the beeps and the display when the door is opened, so using the fridge on Shabbat doesn't operate electrical components. The type of certification (for example "Mehadrin") differs between models and appears in the specifications. You can filter here for models with Shabbat mode.

Is there an extra charge for delivery to a high floor?

In a building without a lift, or when the lift can't be used, refrigerators and freezers carry an extra charge of ₪80 per floor from the 2nd floor up. If the doors have to be removed to bring the fridge in, the charge is ₪60 per door. These extras are paid directly to the delivery crew.
