What horsepower does my room need?

A common rule of thumb: about 1 HP for a room of up to roughly 12 m², 1.25–1.5 HP for 12–20 m², and 2–2.5 HP for a living room of 20–30 m². A top floor, large windows, strong sun or a high ceiling usually call for more. Before ordering, it's worth asking a licensed installer to look at the room.

What's the difference between horsepower and BTU?

"Horsepower" is the common way the market describes an air conditioner's size. What actually measures how much it cools is its cooling output, in BTU per hour. Two units with the same horsepower can differ in output, so compare the BTU figure in the specifications.

What is an inverter air conditioner?

In an inverter unit the compressor speeds up and slows down as needed, instead of switching on and off again and again. It is usually more energy-efficient, keeps a steadier temperature and runs more quietly.

Wall-mounted or mini-central?

A wall-mounted (split) unit hangs on the wall and cools one room. A mini-central unit is installed above a dropped ceiling and sends air to several rooms through ducts. It needs planning in advance and a more complex installation.

What is "Shabbat mode" on an air conditioner?

A mode that allows the unit to be used on Shabbat according to halachic guidelines. The type of certification differs between models and appears in each unit's specifications when the manufacturer has provided it. You can filter here for models with Shabbat mode.
